Heraus aus Alltagstrott und Winterstarre - um den 1.4.2010 soll unsere grosse "Pilgerfahrt" starten. Der Erfurter Wolfram Eschenbach (pensionierter Lehrer f. Körperbehinderte u. passionierter Pilger [Luther-Route Erfurt-Rom, Jakobsweg]) und der Berliner Burkhart Rüchel (Fotograf/Handwerker, Radsportler) machen sich im Frühjahr 2010 mit zwei allein durch Muskelkraft bewegten Tretrollern / sidewalkern / kickbikes auf den langen Weg nach Jerusalem! Unsere Fahrt geht voraussichtlich über Tschechien, Österreich, Ungarn, Rumänien, Bulgarien, Türkei, Syrien, Jordanien nach Israel.

Dieses ungewöhnliche und mit Sicherheit einzigartige Unternehmen war von W. Eschenbach bereits schon vor mehreren Jahren geplant - doch jeder seiner jugendlichen Mitstreiter scheute letztlich diese extreme Herausforderung. Nun gelang es ihm im letzten Sommer mich doch noch für dieses Vorhaben zu begeistern. Es soll alles andere als eine bürgerliche Pauschalreise werden - unser Motto: "sich selbst bewegen - statt sich bewegen lassen!". Bei der Wahl der Fortbewegungsweise fiel, u.a. auch aus Zeitgründen, das reine Wandern/Laufen aus. Und das Fahrrad ist eindeutig "zu schnell", fährt man so doch eigentlich eher an allem vorbei. So fiel als guter Kompromiss die Wahl auf fahrradgrosse Roller - so behält man nicht nur die erwünschte Bodenhaftung sondern hat auch viel besser Zugang zu allem erlebbaren - zu Landschaften, Ländern, Kulturen - und vor allem zu den Menschen! Für die etwa 4-5000 km werden wir ca. 4-6 Monate sehr spartanisch unterwegs sein, so verbringen wir z.B. die Nächte in Zelten, wird nur das absolut notwendigste an Gepäck mitgenommen. Es wird keine Tour-Begleitung oder Streckenunterstützung durch Dritte geben!

Warum ausgerechnet Jerusalem? Jerusalem gilt 3 Weltreligionen als Heilige Stätte. Neben der sportlichen Herausforderung ist uns diese Reise vor allem aus kulturellen Aspekten wichtig - liegen doch am östlichen Mittelmeer nicht nur die Wurzeln unserer abendländischen Kultur sondern war das heilige Land lange die Projektionsfläche für religiös u. weltlich motivierte Sehnsüchte u. Ansprüche (Kreuzzüge, Kolonialpolitik, Weltkriege u.a.). Dass man als "Wanderer zwischen den Welten" auch eine Art Kultur-Botschafter ist wird nicht ausbleiben - werden wir doch über unsere Erlebnisse überall berichten, die Menschen und ihre verschiedenen Ansichten, Lebensweisen usw. zusammen bringen, gelingt es uns vielleicht sogar kleine Brücken zu bauen...

On the 1.4.2010 is the beginning of an amazing journey! A journey that bridges cultures but whose steps lay literally between the motion of a bicycle and that of walking. Travel with us on an adventurous 5 month journey of 4000 kilometres with un-motorized scooters on a modern day "Pilgerfahrt" to the holy city of Jerusalem.
My travelling companion is the Erfurter Wolfram Eschenbach, a 73 year old pensioned teacher for the disabled, a passionate pilgrim (Luther-Route from Erfurt to Rom, some years later along the Jakobsweg too). Burkhart Rüchel - 43 year old, I am also a photographer, handyman and cycling enthusiast. For the spring 2010 we plan on using the opportunity to muster our muscle power for this rather extraordinary journey with sidewalkers from Berlin/Erfurt all the way to Jerusalem!
On our journey let us take you through our online storybook as we travel through the countries and cultures of the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Syria, Jordan and Israel.

This type or mode of transport has never been used on a journey like this before!

The planning of this unusual type of trip was conducted by Wolfram Eschenbach, who began planning several years ago. Over the years many of his younger or potential travel companions could not bring themselves to such an extreme challenge. It wasn’t until last summer that - personally became inspired by Wolfram Eschenbach’s plans to ride a scooter to Jerusalem. It will be something far different than a civil package tour - our Motto for the tour is: "To Move Yourself Instead of to be Moved!".
By the wide array of choices on today´s modes of transport we considered bicycle to even walking. The bicycle is however to fast, so an end result is possibly, ‘yes you do simply ride past’. After careful consideration we did come up with a good alternative, the Unmotorized Scooter. Here we have found a perfect balance or equilibrium between, contact with the earths surface and a means of transport slightly quicker than walking. It also opened up other possibilities especially in the realm of communication with people as you tend to travel slower than bicylce. For our 4-5000 kilometre journey we have planned on a time span of between 5-6 months to complete, there will be no extra support from third parties. Our equipment is based on reduction and is reduced to the maximum, right down to our two single light person sleeping tents.

Why Jerusalem may you ask? Jerusalem is at the centre of three world religions and is a holy city. For us the journey is precious because of its cultural standpoints or views. The areas throughout the Middle East and the Mediterranean have direct links and roots within our own European cultures. Apart from this Jerusalem is the projections-area for religion and has motivated people throughout the ages, from the crusades to colonial politics even world wars. 

We believe we are "Walkers between worlds", even when one foot is on the ground and pushing us further, we are a Cultural Ambassador. We will report on all our experiences along with the people we meet on this one in a life-time journey and aim at all-times to create bridges to overcome differences.

I have known Wolfram Eschenbach personally for almost thirty years now and being two avid sportsmen we look forward to taking part in such a unique journey. A challenge of mind and body against the elements. In spite of everything else I will sum up by saying that I believe we can be classified as two modern day forms of wanderers or two free-spirited desperados both with the right amount inquisitiveness and need for search.
